Vincent D'Onofrio grew a lot while making Law & Order: Criminal Intent, but there was one thing he did not like.
D'Onofrio, 66, opened up about some of his most iconic characters in a video GQ posted on April 10. In the video, he opened up about his role as Detective Robert Goren on Criminal Intent.
He explained that he was offered the role by Dick Wolf, the creator of the series. “He asked me if I would be interested in doing some television,” he remembered. “I'd only done a couple of guest star things when I was much younger, so I really didn't know much about television at all, especially [as] one of the leads on his show.”
He remembered it being “a big ask” and that he took his time deciding. But, ultimately, when he read the script by René Balcer, who developed the series and was the first showrunner, “It was just so good. The scripts were written so well,” he said.

The series, D'Onofrio added, was "really kind of not whodunnits but whydunnits.” The 2001 show was the third spin-off from the main Law & Order series, after Law & Order: SVU. He thought of it as similar to Sherlock Holmes and Columbo.
One of the key differences between Criminal Intent and regular Law & Order was that they ended each episode with the detectives interrogating the suspects and (usually) getting them to confess. “They were usually anywhere from seven pages to 14 or 15 pages,” D'Onofrio remembered, comparing them to doing “a scene from a play.”
“It was a really cool job in that way,” he said. However, filming the series took a heavy toll on him and Kathryn Erbe, who played Alexandra Eames on the show. “It was exhausting for Kate Erbe and I," he said.

“It was a lot of hours,” he said. “. . . We basically averaged about 17-hours a day, every day, for 10 months a year. So that was tough. You know, I hated that. And I'm glad it's really not allowed. Nobody's allowed to do that anymore with actors.”

At the same time, he said, “I left that show a better actor than I was before when I went in. There was so much dialogue to learn all the time. There were so many weird transitions that I had to make within one scene.”
While in a movie, an actor might have to make one or two transitions in a single act, D'Onofrio noted that "in a TV show, there could be three transitions within a scene.”
“So, I didn't know how to do that," he continued. "I had to learn on the job. And I don't think I would have evolved like I did if it wasn't for that show.”
D'Onofrio appeared in all 10 seasons of Criminal Intent (though he and Erbe only appeared in the first two episodes of season nine before returning full-time for the last season). The show ended in 2011.
Post-Criminal Intent, D'Onofrio, who was primarily known for his work in movies like Full Metal Jacket and Men in Black, has starred as Wilson Fisk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He first brought the character to life in Netflix's Daredevil series before reprising the role in 2021's Hawkeye, 2024's Echo and Daredevil: Born Again, whose second season is airing now. Other film roles include 2021's The Eyes of Tammy Faye and 2025's Caught Stealing.
