Bozoma Saint John tells PEOPLE she credits Tina Knowles for encouraging her to date fiancé Keely Watson by showing interest herself
Saint John also reveals that Knowles met Watson in person for the first time last year and teases their interaction

Bozoma Saint John is happily engaged — and she has Tina Knowles to thank for it!
The reality star, 49, recently caught up with PEOPLE at her Real Housewives of Beverly Hills watch party on Thursday, April 9, to celebrate the episode where her fiancé Keely Watson proposed. While reflecting on their love story, Saint John reveals that she initially turned down a date with Watson before getting a push from her friends.
"I was at his nephew’s house, because he's married to Harmonia Rosales, who is an artist whose work I have purchased,” Saint John explains. “They were having an event at their house to celebrate her new book that she was contemplating writing. It was there that his nephew told me that Keely had seen a picture of me and asked if he could set us up. I was like, ‘I'm not going to date your uncle. Do I look like I date uncles?’”
“I was like, ‘Do you see me? Really? This is insulting,’” she quips. “Ms. Tina, Beyoncé's mom, was in the group, and everybody was giving their opinions because I was like, ‘Well, let's go look at his Instagram.’ You've got to do the stalking and see what happens.”

When they pulled up photos of Watson, Saint John says that Knowles, 72, who had split from ex-husband Richard Lawson around that same time, appeared to show interest.
“Ms. Tina, she's like, ‘Well, I date uncles,’ and I was like, ‘You better move. I was here first,’” the Bravolebrity laughs. “‘This is my uncle. You get out of here!’”
It wasn’t until late 2024 that Knowles finally met Watson in person, and Saint John says she finally got her stamp of approval.
“Since we had been looking at the Instagram, she hadn't seen him,” she notes. “Obviously, she knows we're dating and whatnot. So when she met him at the Wicked premiere, she was like, ‘Yeah, that was good.’ So it feels very full circle.”

Saint John and Watson have documented their relationship since just five months into dating when she joined RHOBH for season 14. While they have received criticism for how fast they have been moving — including discussing children and going through IVF — they say they never hesitated to be open on camera.
“There were a lot of things that we were dealing with in real time that became bigger than we anticipated, like having a conversation about having a baby before we said ‘I love you’ to each other, which became such a big thing,” Saint John recalls. “I was so surprised by it, but then at the same time, I was like, ‘But we're not like kids. We're grown and we are mature. We don't have time to waste.’ So we're talking about very serious things right now so we know whether or not we should move forward, because what if we don't agree?”
“But I think it's been really important for us to do it,” she adds. “Because I think there's a lot of conversations like this that are not talked about publicly and people feel shame about it, or people feel like they can't express themselves fully.”

As for having their engagement captured by a film crew, the couple says they are grateful to be able to look back on such a big milestone.
“You've got the best camera and the best sounds, a sound crew, documenting everything,” Watson says. “So at some point, we are going to hopefully get a good full version of this video. But I think being in front of the cameras and doing this, of course, there's even more pressure. You can't stumble over words. You've got to make sure everything's perfect. You just want everything to be right. And then right when it's about to happen, it's like opening kickoff at a football game.”
Saint John continues, “What was an hour and a half worth of proposal and the celebration around it, all of that gets cut down to this bit. So there's so much in that night that I'm like, ‘Oh, I wish you could have seen this, and I wish you could see that and that and that.’ So that's I think the difficult part about watching a very important moment in your life be condensed to a small amount of time. But to Keely's point, I mean, we have the footage, so we will be able to show anybody who wants to see it from a lot of different angles.”
