When it comes to gothic fantasy romances, Edward Scissorhands is a cut above the rest.
Premiering on Dec. 14, 1990, the film marked the first of many collaborations between director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp.
The story of Edward Scissorhands followed Depp's titular character — a gentle, scissor-handed humanoid — as he attempts to integrate into picture-perfect suburbia after being taken in by Peg Boggs (Dianne Weist), a well-meaning mother and Avon lady, and her family, including daughter Kim (Winona Ryder).
A critical and financial success, the film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Depp a Golden Globe nod for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. According to Box Office Mojo, Edward Scissorhands earned more than $86 million at the worldwide box office. Now considered a cult classic, it has continued to gain a devoted and cross-generational fanbase who watch it during Halloween and throughout the holiday season.
Since its release, Burton has shot down the idea of a sequel.
"There are certain films I don't want to make a sequel to. I didn't want to make a sequel to that because it felt like a one-off thing," the filmmaker told IndieWire in November 2024. "Certain things are best left on their own, and that, for me, is one of them."
As Edward Scissorhands celebrates its 35th anniversary, read on to see what Depp, Ryder, Wiest and the rest of the cast are up to now.

Depp had career momentum when he stepped into Edward Scissorhands' memorable makeup, thanks to roles in films like 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street and 1986's Platoon, as well as becoming a household name for starring in the TV series 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990.
Edward Scissorhands kicked off his decades-long partnership with Burton — with whom he's collaborated several times over the years with the films Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Dark Shadows (2012).
During an interview in Tara Wood's untitled docuseries about Burton, Tim Burton: Life in the Line, Depp said the Edward Scissorhands script "passed through everything, anything, solid and went to the very core of whatever I am. The writing was beautiful. The character was beautiful. What I suppose [attracted] me emotionally was that Edward was me. It's exactly what I should be doing."
Outside of his work with Burton, Depp is known for the films What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Donnie Brasco (1997), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Chocolat (2000), Blow (2001), Finding Neverland (2004), Public Enemies (2009), Rango (2011), Black Mass (2015), Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and Jeanne du Barry (2023).
In 2003, he transformed into Jack Sparrow in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, playing the carefree swashbuckler in five films through 2017. He also played Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018).
After stepping back from Hollywood following his defamation case and subsequent six-week trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, the prolific actor will make his big return to theaters on Nov. 13, 2026, with a major role in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. As Deadline reported in October 2025, the upcoming movie adaptation will offer a dark interpretation of Charles Dickens' beloved novella.
Depp shares two children with his ex Vanessa Paradis: son Jack and daughter Lily-Rose, who has followed in her father's footsteps as an actor.
While revered by many, Lily-Rose revealed that the tragic ending of Edward Scissorhands was "so distressing" that "she has refused to watch it ever since."
"I was traumatized by it," Lily-Rose, who watched the film when she was 3, told Harper's Bazaar UK in January 2025. "Not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was being so mean to him, and I got really upset."
The Nosferatu star added, "I remember being petrified by that, which is weird, because I don't have many memories from when I was that young. It's a difficult childhood memory."

Edward Scissorhands was not Ryder's first time in the world of Burton; she secured her breakout role as Lydia Deetz in the 1988 dark comedy Beetlejuice and has since thanked the filmmaker for believing in her early in her career.
"You affirmed my voice. You reinforced my confidence to be myself, to go against the tides of conformity," Ryder said during her speech at Burton's Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony in 2024, per Entertainment Weekly. "Your creative inclusiveness showed me what true artistic collaboration looked like, and, in other words, you made being a weird girl not just okay, but something to celebrate and even kind of cool."
Having become a sensation largely thanks to her role in 1989's Heathers, Ryder went on to star in '90s classics like Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), The Age of Innocence (1993), Reality Bites (1994), Little Women (1994), Alien Resurrection (1997) and Girl, Interrupted (1999).
She reunited with Burton in later years, lending her voice to the 2012 animated flick Frankenweenie and reprising her role as Lydia Deetz in the 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Ryder has been part of the ensemble cast of Stranger Things for its entire five-season run, from 2016 to the series finale in 2025.
Once romantically involved with former costar Depp in the '90s, Ryder has been dating Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011.

Burton turned to a true horror icon, Vincent Price, to bring The Inventor, the man responsible for creating Edward, to life. Unfortunately, The Inventor dies before putting the finishing touches — you know, hands — on his beloved creation.
Price's filmography spans the 1930s to the 1990s and is perhaps most defined by his contributions to the genre, including roles in House of Wax (1953), The Fly (1958), House on Haunted Hill (1959) and several film adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's works. He also narrated Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video.
Beyond horror, he starred in The Three Musketeers (1948), The Ten Commandments (1956), The Great Mouse Detective (1986) and The Whales of August (1987).
Price was also well known as an expert on art and for writing several cookbooks.
Edward Scissorhands was Price's final film released during his lifetime. He died in 1993 at the age of 82, according to The New York Times.
