Lupton, a mom of one from Moore, Okla., worked as a flight attendant for nearly three decades, a majority of those years spent with Southwest.
“Being a flight attendant is not really a job, it’s a lifestyle, It becomes your life, truly,” her niece Hannah Lupton previously told PEOPLE. “She understood that you don’t just travel for vacation, you also travel for funerals and all sorts of reasons. So she was really great at communicating that with people, and she loved just learning about other people’s cultures.”

Lupton had been in Hawaii for work but was planning to stay for several days before returning, according to her family.
The flight attendant’s sister, Tresa Lupton, previously told CBS affiliate KWTV that a hotel worker found Lupton’s body.
“I was in disbelief and trying to not believe what I was experiencing,” Tresa added to NBC affiliate KFOR. “But I still can’t believe it. It doesn’t seem real.”
Tresa also recalled receiving a text from Lupton hours before she died. “She just went out with one of her flight attendant friends, and they danced and had a good time,” Tresa told KWTV, noting that her sister also said she’d just gotten a tattoo.
In a previous statement, Southwest Airlines said it was “deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague.”
“We have offered our condolences and support to the employee’s family and co-workers,” the airline added, “and are engaged with local authorities as they investigate.”
