At long last, the greatest character in the entire Mario series, no, the entire Nintendo canon, gets her time in the sun. I'm obviously talking about Birdo. First introduced to the Mario universe in 1988's Super Mario Bros. 2, she immediately endeared herself to audiences thanks to her bizarrely adorable design and downright weird ability to shoot eggs out of her cannon-like mouth. Following her debut, Birdo appeared sporadically in games like Super Mario RPG and Mario Tennis.

In more recent years, she's had a resurgence, making the playable roster in Mario Party Jamboree, appearing as free DLC in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and even adding some class to the Switch 2 launch thanks to her appearance as a playable driver in Mario Kart World. Now, the latest chapter of the Birdoaissance is upon us, thanks to her presence in the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Check it out below.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, was a box office smash, grossing $1.3 billion worldwide, so of course a sequel was inevitable. This morning saw the release of a short Nintendo Direct video presentation, hosted by Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto. The centerpiece of the presentation was a full-length trailer for the movie, showing Mario and Luigi in action in a desert setting that will be familiar to fans of Super Mario Odyssey.

For me, the show-stopping moment of the trailer was a snippet of a one-on-one battle between Princess Peach and Birdo. In recent years, Birdo has been paired with Yoshi, I suppose since they're both dinosaurs who throw eggs. Pitting Birdo against Peach is likely a nod to Super Mario Bros. 2, in which Peach was a playable character and Birdo was a recurring boss enemy. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether Birdo will be a silent figure in the game or have her own A-list voice actor like the rest of the cast.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie boasts one heck of a voice cast, with Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Brie Larson, Jack Black, Bennie Safdie, and Keegan-Michael Key among the actors confirmed so far. If they were smart, Nintendo and Universal would court Madonna to play Birdo, but I don't think they can afford her... And I'm confident that Madonna has no idea who Birdo is. But hey, stranger things have happened, right? #MadonnaIsBirdo

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled for release on April 1, 2026.
